Elementary School Attached to University of Tsukuba and CRICED Held a Lesson Study Session With the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of Indonesia
In August 2023, Center for Research on International Cooperation in Educational Development (CRICED) and the elementary school attached to University of Tsukuba, in collaboration with the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) SEAQIM, SEAQIL, and SEAMOLEC, conducted lesson study workshops at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (August 23rd: Bandung), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of Indonesia (August 24th: Jakarta), and the Yogyakarta Teacher Training Center (August 25th: Yogyakarta). Teachers and educators participated on-site via Indonesian interpreters, with 200 participants at each venue and more than 300 people viewing each workshop on YouTube (in total, more than 1,200 YouTube views as of August 27).
In Indonesia, the math textbooks developed in collaboration with CRICED have been adopted as the new national textbooks and have been fully implemented (distributed online) since July. This lesson study was conducted by the original authors, the math department of the Elementary School attached to University of Tsukuba (Vice Principal Mr. NATSUSAKA, Mr. MORIMOTO, and Mr. OHNO) and CRICED, in collaboration with related organizations, with the aim of sharing information on how to use the textbooks. In particular, SEAQIM, SEAMEO Regional Centre for QITEP in Mathematics (Yogyakarta), and CRICED Director Dr ISODA are currently promoting collaborative research with the goal of publishing an encyclopedia of research terms for mathematics classes in Indonesian by the end of this year to support its utilization. This lesson study meeting was planned with the intention of expanding this project. At this meeting, it was also decided that the Indonesian Mathematics Society will adopt the encyclopedia in its workshops for mathematics education researchers.
