SAKURA Exchange Program in Science

The University of Tsukuba's Global Commons invited a total of 13 people including 8 undergraduate students, 2 graduate students, 2 government administrators and 1 faculty member from Myanmar, Kazakhstan and Colombia from December 9 to 15 under the framework of Japan-Asia Youth Exchange Program in Science (Sakura Exchange Program in Science) administered by the Japan Science and Technology Agency.


In accordance with the theme of "Japanese Cutting-edge Technology and Artificial Intelligence", as a laboratory training program at the University of Tsukuba, they had an opportunity to receive classroom lectures about a new interdisciplinary field in Robotics, Informatics Technology, and Artificial Intelligence by the faculty members of Engineering, Information and Systems at the Center for Cybernics Research and other sites. And they also had a lecture about supercomputers at the Center for Computational Sciences, and observed advanced technologies at the University of Tsukuba Hospital, then visited the Research Facility Center for Science and Technology (Applied Accelerator Division) and the Empowerment Studio.
In addition, they toured Cyberdyne Studio, which is managed by Cyberdyne, a Tsukuba University Venture developing, manufacturing and selling HALR, a cyborg-type robot which uses cutting-edge technology centered around Human, Machine, and Information; Genetic Resources Center, National Agriculture and Food Research Organization; JICA Tsukuba Center; and the Tsukuba Space Center, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
In the last day of the program, participating students from three countries gave presentations on science and technology and the tourist resources of their country to the other students, and the high-level science and technology of Japan and Japanese culture which they learned in the program.


Through the program including various site tours, there are many students interested in entering a graduate school of the University of Tsukuba. It was a fruitful program for promoting student exchange with Myanmar, Kazakhstan and Colombia (Universidad de Los Andes) and further developing human resources who will be a bridge between Japan and the world.
